An Easy Solution to Higher ScoresJanuary 2007 Shooting Tipby: Dan SchindlerTry as we might to score X’s, those O’s do add up on the score sheet. We constantly battle misses with equipment, strategies, equipment, practice, tournaments, physical and mental preparation. And still, at times, it seems the misses are winning. We just can’t get our scores up to where we believe they should be. Here’s one way you can - quickly. This won’t dazzle you with any state-of-the-art technological advancements. In my opinion, that’s why folks don’t spend much time on this recommendation. But they should. Take a look at your last score sheet, field by field, and count up the “easy” targets you missed. Were there 5? 10? 15? I’ll bet your sheet shows you did break a lot of the targets on these “easier” fields. A miss here, a miss there – it adds up – fast, to unpleasant numbers. Your new practice regimen stops this eroding of good scores. Here’s the drill. The drill is not about breaking the easier target. You already know how to do that. It’s about strengthening focus and concentration. Establish a number like 10. Break 10 in a row. If you drop a target, stop immediately. Start the drill again. Once you’re successful at 10, increase your number. Do the drill again. 1 miss? Start over! Then, take that new level of concentration to your next tournament. Spend time on the easier birds until you can break them ALL. EVERY time you go into the box. Advanced sporting clays shooters live by this motto: “Break all the easy birds, most of the intermediates and some of the hard ones.” The easy targets are the foundation of your best score. Focus – build that foundation with X’s. |
